Small Space, BIG dreams: A blog about homesteading, diy, and creating a cozy life ☕️
Follow as we turn our historical building into our dream home! ✨️

I went down to our building yesterday and just sat I went down to our building yesterday and just sat out there for a while.

I didn’t have anywhere to be.
No rush. No reason to leave.

I watered the flowers, watched the chickens, and added a few little things…
turned that lantern into a bird feeder, hung a bit of decor on the coop, and finally set up the old coop door as a trellis for my clematis.

Nothing big, but it felt really peaceful.

Every time I’m there, it just feels like home already.
And I always end up a little sad when it’s time to leave.

For now, I’ll take getting to go “play” down there whenever I can 🤍

Our kitchen has officially turned into a little pa Our kitchen has officially turned into a little pasta shop lately… and I’m not mad about it 🤍

We’ve been making everything from fettuccine to tortellini, but this sourdough lasagna has quickly become a family favorite. It’s layered, cheesy, comforting… the kind of meal that brings everyone to the table without being asked twice.

And every time I make it, I picture future evenings in our home… a backyard dinner under string lights, fresh salad, warm garlic bread, a little wine, and this lasagna right in the middle of it all.

Simple food. Slow moments. The kind you remember.

Learning hand embroidery again and not giving up t Learning hand embroidery again and not giving up this time 🤍

I used to think this craft was too hard for me. Tangled threads, messy stitches, and the impossible French knot 😅
But after slowing down and practicing a few simple techniques, something finally clicked.

These aren’t perfect, but they’re a start.
And they’re part of the slow, cozy, handmade life I’m building. One small stitch at a time.

If you’ve been wanting to learn embroidery or any slow craft, this is your sign to keep going ✨

Slow mornings, open windows, and the sound of the Slow mornings, open windows, and the sound of the wind through the trees 🤍

I’ve been learning to appreciate the in-between seasons of life… even before we move into our dream home on Main Street.

These are the moments I don’t want to rush past.

The soft return of green 🌿 After a few days away, The soft return of green 🌿

After a few days away, the rain had done its quiet work. The garden changed almost overnight!!Everything feels like it is waking up at once, stretching toward something new.

I keep thinking about what this space will become one day. A real garden. A place to sit with something cold in hand, listening to chickens, birds, and wind moving through the vines. ❤️

For now, I just get to watch it all begin again.

I already knew what these were the second I pulled I already knew what these were the second I pulled them out.

But I had a feeling not everyone would.

We were demoing one of the original windows in our 120-year-old building, and I grabbed these out of the wall. Heavy, simple, and something you would never notice unless you have worked on an old house before.

It made me curious how many little details like this we have forgotten over time.

Things that used to be normal just quietly disappeared as homes changed.

So now I want to know… did you recognize them right away?

We lost Edith, and in the middle of that, life just felt… heavier than usual. Add in a back injury, and everything slowed down in a way I didn’t plan for.

So if I’ve felt a little absent, that’s why. I’ve just been taking things one day at a time, tending to what’s right in front of me.

But I missed you, friend 🤍

This is the hardest part of homesteading. It’s ea This is the hardest part of homesteading.

It’s easy to share the fresh eggs, the slow mornings, the simple joys. The cozy parts. The ones that feel like a dream you’re building with your own two hands.

But this… this is part of it too.

Today we had to say goodbye to one of our girls.

She had been struggling all day, and we did everything we could think to do. We sat with her, kept her warm, prayed over her, and hoped she would pull through. But as the hours passed, it became clear that loving her well meant letting her go.

So we wrapped her up, carried her out to the coop, and let the others gather around her one last time. It felt important… like they needed to understand, in their own quiet way, that she wasn’t coming back.

And then, in the gentlest and most selfless act of love, Jason helped her pass peacefully and quickly.

We buried her in the garden, where life will keep growing, just like it always does.

Homesteading is beautiful. It’s meaningful. It’s full of life and purpose.

But it also asks something of you.

It asks you to show up on the hard days.
To make decisions that break your heart.
To love your animals enough to give them a good life… and a dignified ending.

Tonight feels heavy.

But I’m grateful we could give her a peaceful goodbye. 🤍

I was down at the building last night just soaking I was down at the building last night just soaking it in for a bit, and I caught this sweet little moment.

The chickens were out, and all these tiny songbirds were right there with them, pecking around like they belonged together.

They made little bird friends and it honestly made my whole day!

I keep thinking about what this place is going to be one day. A garden, bird feeders, slow evenings, and little moments like this everywhere you look.

Some days are heavy. Stress, grief, uncertainty, i Some days are heavy. Stress, grief, uncertainty, it all piles up. But this place, this old building, this home, is my comfort.

When I walk in, it feels like a warm hug. I can sit, breathe, and just be for a little while. Somehow, even when the world feels too heavy, I feel peace here.

This is the place worth fighting for. The place that reminds me that no matter what life throws my way, there is still a corner of the world where I feel like I belong.

Do you have a place like this for you?

We’ve been trying to be more mindful about waste l We’ve been trying to be more mindful about waste lately. Just paying attention to what we’re using and what we’re throwing away.

Not anything extreme… just slowly learning to be more intentional with what we use and what we throw away.

Composting has been such an easy place to start.

Nothing complicated. Just scraps, a simple system, and letting it turn back into something useful.

There’s never a dull moment with chickens 😂 I loo There’s never a dull moment with chickens 😂

I looked away for two seconds and suddenly we’ve got a full investigation happening in my flower pot. No training, just vibes.

They’re better than TV. Always “helping,” always in something, always making me laugh.

Somewhere between restoring our old Main Street building and building our dream little mini homestead, I apparently hired a team of chaotic garden assistants.

And honestly… I wouldn’t have it any other way 🐓

Would you do it? Every single thing that goes int Would you do it?

Every single thing that goes into this home has to go up these stairs. And I mean everything. Windows that weigh a few hundred pounds. Sheets of drywall. Subfloor. Two by fours. Tools. Furniture. All of it.

There are days we stand at the bottom, look up, and just laugh a little because it feels a bit crazy. But then again, this place is worth it to us. Every step, every load, every sore muscle.

So I have to ask… would you do it? Or are we just a little crazy?

You wouldn’t even know these windows existed… Whe You wouldn’t even know these windows existed…

When we first bought this building, they were completely covered up, hidden behind drywall like they were meant to be forgotten.

My mom and I uncovered them years ago, just hoping there was something worth saving underneath.

And now… they’re finally coming back to life.

We have both windows in, and the way the light pours through in the evening feels like a reward for all the slow, messy progress it took to get here. I love opening them at sunset, listening to the birds, watching the sky change, and imagining what it will feel like when this place is finally home.

Piece by piece, it’s all coming together 🤍

Sometimes dreams do come true… just not on the tim Sometimes dreams do come true… just not on the timeline you expected.

We found this building in 2012.
It took until 2018 to finally buy it.
And we’ve been working on it ever since.

There have been moments I didn’t know how we would keep going. Financial stress. COVID. Losing people I love, including my mom and the one who started this dream with me.

But something in me never let go.

This dream has always been bigger than the setbacks. Bigger than the delays. Bigger than the grief.

And I’m not quitting. Because the life we’re building here… it’s worth it.

If you’re holding onto something that feels far away right now, don’t give up. Keep showing up. Even if it’s slow. Even if it’s hard.

Sometimes that’s exactly how dreams come true 🤍

I have been having way too much fun experimenting I have been having way too much fun experimenting with new water kefir flavors, and this one might be my favorite so far 🤍

This lavender water kefir lemonade is perfectly sweet and tart, super refreshing, and such an easy way to sneak in some natural probiotics without even thinking about it. It just feels like spring in a glass!

I’ve been trying to find more ways to enjoy my homemade water kefir, especially heading into warmer weather, and lemonade felt like the perfect place to start. The light lavender flavor makes it feel a little extra unique without being overpowering.

Honestly, I can already picture this sitting out for an Easter lunch or just sipping a glass in the garden with a good book and some sunshine.

I’ll be sharing more flavor ideas soon because I am fully in my experimenting era right now and loving it!

Lately, our kitchen has been covered in flour more often than not, and honestly… I wouldn’t have it any other way. 😊We’ve been on a little homemade pasta kick as a family. Fettuccine, spaghetti, even tortellini from scratch. It’s messy, a little imperfect, and so much fun. But this sourdough lasagna? This one has been a favorite! There’s just something about those layers… the soft, tender noodles, the rich sauce, all that melted, bubbly cheese. It’s the kind of meal that makes everyone go back for seconds without even thinking about it. It also makes amazing leftovers! And while we’ve been enjoying it now, I can’t help but think about the future too. I picture a cozy evening at our future home… a long table outside, string lights glowing, fresh salad on the table, garlic bread still warm, a glass of wine in hand. Family, friends, laughter drifting through the yard. This sourdough lasagna right in the center of it all. It’s one of those meals that feels just as right on a cozy fall evening as it does in the middle of summer. Comforting, simple, and meant to be shared. If you’ve never made lasagna with sourdough, this might be your sign. It’s become such a special little tradition in our home already.I’ll link the recipe in the comments 🤍 … See MoreSee Less

There’s something about learning a slow craft that humbles you a little.Yesterday I picked up hand embroidery again for the third time. And honestly, it started with frustration. Tangled thread, dropped needles, knots I couldn’t figure out. Looking at you, French knot 🙃But I kept going. I slowed down. Linen aprons, hand stitched towels, little touches that feel old world and intentional. If there’s something you’ve been wanting to learn but it feels hard or messy right now, don’t give up.
