Why This Recipe Is My Favorite
I love love loooove this recipe because it yields perfect cookies every single time. Throughout the years I have continued to experiment with chocolate chip cookie recipes. I finally found this recipe for the perfect cookie and I am so excited to share it with you!
A Surprise Ingredient
Most chocolate chip cookie recipes are very similar. You have the butter, the sugars, the eggs, the vanilla, then add in the mixture of flour, baking soda, and salt. There is a secret ingredient in this recipe that is so vital to creating the perfect texture that truly makes this the only chocolate chip cookie recipe you will ever need……….APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! Yes, you read that correctly. ACV is the super hero ingredient that makes this recipe so amazing.

What does Apple Cider Vinegar Do in Baking?
Apple cider is a hero ingredient when it comes to baking for the following reasons:
It Improves Leavening.
Because of the acidic nature of ACV, it makes the baking soda and baking powder more effective. The dough will have a better rise, creating fluffier cookies.
Creates a Soft, Moist Crumb.
Because ACV is acidic, it can hinder the gluten from forming leaving you with a more soft and delicate crumb.
Creates a Deeper Flavor.
Apple cider vinegar can enhance the flavor in many baked goods.
Builds a beautiful texture.
Apple cider vinegar in cookies will create a more delightful texture. The outside will be nice and crisp with the inside being soft and airy, perfect for milk to seep into those precious air pockets!
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or freshly milled flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter, barely melted (not hot)
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups chocolate chips (or add-ins of your choice)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Butter
Gently warm the butter in the microwave for about 20 seconds until it is soft and slightly melted, but not hot. Set it aside to cool while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3: Cream the Butter and Sugars
In a stand mixer, combine the cooled butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Add the vanilla extract and apple cider vinegar, then beat until smooth and well combined.
Step 4: Add the Egg
Mix in the egg until just combined. Be careful not to overmix at this stage.

Step 5: Add Chocolate Chips
Stir in the chocolate chips or any add-ins of your choice until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Step 6: Chill the Dough
Cover and chill the dough for 30 minutes. This step is important for achieving thick, chewy cookies with the perfect texture.
Step 7: Scoop the Dough
Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded portions of dough onto a parchment-lined or silicone-lined baking sheet. Space cookies about 3 inches apart.
Step 8: Bake
Bake at 375°F for 9 to 11 minutes. The edges should be golden brown, and the centers will look slightly underbaked.
Step 9: Cool and Finish
Allow cookies to rest on the baking sheet for at least 1 minute before transferring to a cooling rack. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt while still warm if desired.

Flavor Variations
One of my favorite things about this chocolate chip cookie recipe is how easy it is to customize. It creates the perfect base for all kinds of delicious mix-ins, so you can make a different version every time you bake.
Try adding chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch, or mix in white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, M&M’s, shredded coconut, or dried fruit for a fun twist. One of my personal favorites is chopped pistachios, and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top creates the perfect sweet and salty combination. Around the holidays, I love folding in chopped peppermint bark for a festive mint chocolate flavor.
The possibilities are endless, so don’t be afraid to get creative! If you come up with a favorite flavor combination, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to chill the cookie dough?
Chilling the dough is crucial! It helps the cookies set up so they bake evenly, and it enhances the flavor and texture, giving you that perfect crisp edge and soft center.
Can I use freshly milled flour?
Yes! You can substitute all-purpose flour with freshly milled flour. Just note that freshly milled flour may absorb more liquid, so keep an eye on the dough consistency.
What kind of chocolate chips work best?
I love using semi-sweet chocolate chips, but feel free to get creative! Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or even a mix all work well.
Can I use coconut oil instead of butter?
I haven’t tested it with coconut oil, but you could try a 1:1 substitution. Keep in mind that the flavor and texture may vary slightly.
How do I store leftover cookies?
Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-5 days. If you prefer crisp edges, you can also freeze them and reheat them briefly in the oven to bring back that perfect texture.
Can I freeze the cookie dough?
Yes! Scoop the dough onto a baking sheet and freeze individual balls. Once frozen, transfer them to a zip-top bag. You can bake them straight from frozen. Just add a couple of extra minutes to baking time.
