Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Quick and Easy:
No baking required. Just melt, swirl, and set.
Perfect for Gifting:
Wrap a few pieces in parchment and tie with twine for a heartfelt homemade gift.
Festive and Versatile:
Enjoy as is, or crumble it over hot chocolate, stir it into cookie dough, or add it to your Christmas charcuterie board.
Sweet and Salty:
The flaky sea salt balances the peppermint and chocolate beautifully.
Ingredients
- 15 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped, in chips, or melting wafers (dark chocolate works beautifully too)
- 12 ounces white chocolate, chopped, in chips, or white melting wafers
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 3–4 candy canes or peppermint candies, crushed
- Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions
Prepare the pan:
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Melt the chocolate:
In a double boiler on the stove (See my pic below. I make mine out of stacking 2 pans), melt the semi-sweet chocolate (or dark, if using) stirring frequently until smooth.
Spread the chocolate:
Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it into an even layer about ¼ inch thick. Let it sit at room temperature while you prepare the white chocolate, about 10 minutes. It doesn’t need to be fully set.
Melt the white chocolate:
Melt the white chocolate using the same method. Stir in 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract.
Swirl the layers:
Pour the white chocolate directly over the semi-sweet chocolate layer. Use a butter knife to gently swirl the two together for a marbled effect. This helps mesh the flavors beautifully.
Add toppings:
Sprinkle sea salt over the top first, then finish with crushed peppermint candies.
Set and break:
Let the bark cool completely at room temperature, or place it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm. Once set, break into pieces and enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Salted Peppermint Bark
Why didn’t my peppermint bark layers stick together?
The layers may separate if the bottom chocolate is completely hardened before adding the white chocolate. For the best results, let the first layer cool until it’s just set but still slightly tacky before pouring on the white chocolate. This helps the layers bond together.
Can I use chocolate chips to make peppermint bark?
Yes! Semi-sweet chocolate chips work well for the bottom layer, and white chocolate chips can be used for the top. For the smoothest texture, use high-quality chocolate or melting wafers.
How do I store homemade peppermint bark?
Store peppermint bark in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. If your kitchen is warm, store it in the refrigerator to prevent the chocolate from softening.
Can I freeze peppermint bark?
Yes. Place the bark in an airtight freezer-safe container with parchment paper between the layers. Freeze for up to 3 months. Let it sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Why is my peppermint bark soft?
Peppermint bark may become soft if it hasn’t chilled long enough or if it’s stored in a warm environment. Refrigerate the bark until it is completely firm before breaking it into pieces.
Can I use peppermint extract instead of crushed candy canes?
Peppermint extract adds peppermint flavor, but it won’t provide the crunchy texture that crushed candy canes do. For the best results, use both peppermint extract and crushed peppermint candies.
What is the best chocolate for peppermint bark?
Good-quality semi-sweet or dark chocolate paired with real white chocolate creates the best flavor and texture. Chocolate bars and melting wafers generally melt more smoothly than standard chocolate chips.
Why add flaky sea salt to peppermint bark?
A light sprinkle of flaky sea salt balances the sweetness of the chocolate and peppermint while enhancing the overall flavor. It also adds a delicious contrast that makes this salted peppermint bark extra special.
